Design Observer: Everything I Know About Design I Learned from The Sopranos

Michael Bierut gives us some entertaining yet useful lessons about the business of design that can be learned from the fictional Italian mafia.

My favorite:

My advice? Put that thing down awhile, we go get our joints copped, and tomorrow the words’ll come blowing out your ass.”

One of the most difficult adjustments to design in a 9-5 is that when I’m stuck on a problem, whether creative or technical, it’s difficult to escape and clear my mind. But that’s exactly what I need to do so that I can stumble onto the solution.

If your boss at the 9-5 knows what's good for them, they'll let you spend some time at the park, or the Bing if that's your cup of tea.

And speaking of Soprano's advice and bosses, an old boss of mine wrote an entire book about business lessons to be learned from Tony - http://www.amazon.com/Tony-Soprano-Management-Leadership-Inspired/dp/0425194949/

Oh, the bosses are quite accommodating. (One of them is in line for an iPhone as we speak). There's actually a nice lake behind the building to venture to when in need of a walk.

That book looks like a worthwhile read. I'll have to check it out.

Never heard of this guy before. But his work sounds like it is worth taking the time to read. I'll check him out.
