Just checking in

I realized this weekend that it’s been over a month since anything new has appeared here. I’ve been so busy with other obligations, namely work and finishing up my degree. Each has been fighting for my awake hours, leaving little room for personal indulgences such as this site. It’s a shame, because I prefer to view this site as a personal necessity. ryanberg.net is where I can better my writing, design, and programming skills all at once. I’d like to give a quick update on each of these three elements.

There’s been much I’d like to comment on this month, but no time to clearly do so in an organized manner. I refuse to just throw words haphazardly onto these pages. I had hoped my “In response to…” posts would allow me to get quick reactions up, but because of their appearance on the site it has never been clear what these are supposed to be.

As a result, to coincide with my in-progress move to WebFaction I’m doing a bit of realignment with the design to allow room for my new del.icio.us feed which will contain the brief commentary. I’m taking advantage of this opportunity to really refine the execution of the design direction this site has taken. I’m currently nearing the end of my Photoshop mockup phase.

Del.icio.us links don’t just appear by themselves. I’ll have to write a bit of code to integrate them in a stream with my full entries. Nothing too difficult. The biggest code change that will happen with my move to the new server is on my commenting system. I’m currently using my own modified of the FreeComment application included with Django to use Akismet spam filtering. It hasn’t been getting the job done. I’ll be using James’ comment-utils to handle moderation and spam filtering in the future.

I’m not sure when this will all be ready, but I really hope it’s soon. I’m eager to get these improvements out in the open so that I can finally feel satisfied with my online home.

Aaaah, the recursive nature of the inline picture on this post reminds me of the Infinite Cat Project.
